On 13 September 2014, I had the privilege of discussing copyright basics with the group, Ang Ilustrador ng Kabataan (Ang InK), at the Corredor Gallery of U.P. Diliman's College of Fine Arts.
With the members of Ilustrador Ng Kabataan (INK) |
Ang InK is the first and only organization in the Philippines dedicated to creating art for children. Inkies (which is the nickname used to refer to members of the group) are often tapped by Philippine publishers to make illustrations for their children's books. The group also holds exhibits displaying the children-inspired creations.
As creatives, the group is passionate about protecting their artwork. My goal at the workshop was to arm the Inkies with basic knowledge on copyright, especially the answers to the questions [i] when do they own the copyright over their works, [ii] what are their rights as copyright owners, and [iii] when can others use their creations.
We discussed real-life examples and practical tips on how they can protect their artistic creations from infringement and onerous contractual stipulations. It was awesome to see that they were intently listening and interested in the topic. And there were A LOT of insightful questions thrown at me during the Q&A.
After the Q&A, I received a pleasant surprise: a box of goodies from CookieBar, a publication from Inkies entitled Manimalaman, and a signed artwork from Prof. Ruben De Jesus of U.P. Diliman! I'm so gonna get that artwork framed.
