{travels} City Mosque, Kota Kinabalu, Malaysia

More of our anniversary celebration at Kota Kinabalu, Malaysia. Our second stop during our DIY (no teksi) city tour of Kota Kinabalu was the famous “Floating Mosque of Kota Kinabalu,” KK’s City Mosque in front of Likas Bay.

The Kota Kinabalu City Mosque is the biggest mosque in the whole of KK. The building is surrounded by a man-made lagoon, and the night shots that I saw of this mosque are just breath taking! Unfortunately for me, I took this shot during high noon on a cloudless day, so the colors are not as dynamic.

The KK City Mosque is open for public visits daily except Fridays from 8am to 5pm, since Friday is a day of worship for Muslims. There are no fees charged on visitors, but you have to be in the proper attire. Mr. Sparks and I were both wearing shorts, so going inside was out of the question. We had to settle for peeking inside the prayer hall. This was a first for both of us! We’ve never seen the inside of a Muslim prayer hall. The Mosque certainly made the most of their lagoon. Not only were there local kids fishing in the lagoon, they also have a paddle boat service, where you can ride a paddle boat for 15-minutes at MYR5 for adults and MYR3 for children below 12.
