Po Lin Monastery is a Buddhist monastery founded in 1906 by three monks. "Po Lin," literally translated, is "Precious Lotus."

More of our day at Ngong Ping 360, Lantau Island.


A short trek at Ngong Ping 360 will lead to the Wisdom Path. Professor Jao Tsung-I wanted to make a large-scale reproduction of an original calligraphy featuring the Heart Sutra which he donated in favor of the Hong Kong government. The calligraphy was carved on to giant wooden columns reminiscent of bamboo tiles (zhujian) used for writing in ancient times.

Our first out-of-the-country trip together was a three-day trip to Hong Kong and Macau. On our last day, we took a bus ride to Ngong Ping 360 at Lantau Island.

This is the Tian Tan Buddha, more commonly known to locals as "Big Buddha."

The Tian Tan Buddha at Ngong Ping 360, Lantau, Hong Kong.

More commonly known to locals as "Big Buddha," it is the world's largest seated outdoor bronze Buddha statue.
